In front of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution memorial, on the Kossuth Lajos Square, the third largest parliament in the world (spread over 18,000 sqm) stands proud. This neogothic masterpiece of 691 rooms also showcases Renaissance and Baroque influences. The excessiveness of the project, completed in 1904, can be found in the gilding (40 kilos of gold being used), the fine detail of the stained-glass windows, the 242 sculptures that adorn the place, the spectacular cupolas and the frescoes that dress up the ceilings. The 96-metre high dome is visible all around town.
The 45-minute guided tours will present you the ornamental stairs, the House of Magnates and the Holy Crown of Hungary, displayed in the Main Hall. Book your tickets in advance to avoid long waiting lines, for the House of the Nation, still seat of the National Assembly, remains one of the most popular attractions of the capital.
